While we’ve never really bought into drawing gender lines down a cocktail menu, we are conscious of the statement a cocktail order can make. When a woman strolls up to a bar and orders whiskey on the rocks, she can immediately get some props from the bartender.

These days, it’s considered sexy when a women orders a “man’s” drink. Just be advised: the men who can’t handle you might be scared off on a first date.

If you’re looking for an alternative to the sugary drinks that are typically called “women’s” drinks, here are some of our favorites:

Whiskey & Ginger: Order your favorite whiskey on the rocks with a splash of Ginger Ale and a lime wedge. This is perfect for summer and is easily drinkable for the newly converted whiskey lover.

Gin Martini: If you’ve been reading our blog, you know that Gin is in. Make sure you let the bartender know how you like it, dirty or with a twist.

Whiskey Sour: This is an easy choice, if you’re in the mood for something sour. Add some of your favorite garnishes and you’re done.

Salty Dog: Looking for a breakfast cocktail? Skip the mimosa and get a Salty Dog. Vodka and grapefruit juice, with a touch of salt, will wake you up with a kick.
