Last week we took a walk through time starting with the Prohibition and wrapping up in the 1940’s. Today we will continue walking through history, cocktail in hand.

Let’s start in the 50’s, America was feeling pretty strong as the world’s strongest military power. With inflated egos emerged a baby boom, prosperity-new cars, suburban homes, and an abundance of office cocktails.

Join Mad Men’s Don Draper and enjoy an Old Fashioned…

Ingredients
2 dashes aromatic bitters
½ tsp sugar dissolved with water and bitters
1 ½ oz of Makers Mark bourbon
1 cherry
1 orange slice
1 lemon wedge

How to
Pour bitters and a dash of water over sugar. Add ice, bourbon, and stir before adding the cherry, orange, and lemon.

The radical 60’s gave the country a bit of a shake, with free loving hippies and the civil rights movement. No matter what battle you were fighting, it is well deserving of a hard drink. To sooth your headache we have the Gibson Martini.

Ingredients
1 ½ oz gin
¾ oz vermouth
2 cocktail onions

How to
Stir gin and vermouth over ice cubes in a mixing glass. Strain into a cocktail glass. Add the cocktail onions and serve.

With every minority rising for justice in the 70’s, the dams of society broke open and it all came flooding out. This is exactly why everyone in their right mind enjoyed a well-made Sidecar while getting groovy in their bellbottoms.

Ingredients
1 ounce brandy
1 ounce premium orange liqueur
¾ ounce fresh lemon
Flamed orange peel for garnish

How to
Combine all ingredients in a cocktail shaker filled with ice. Shake well. Strain into an old-fashioned glass filled with crushed ice. Garnish with the flamed orange peel. Note: if served ‘up’ – strain into a small cocktail glass with a sugared rim.

Now, let me introduce you to the 80’s. The decade of florescent lipsticks and eye shadows perfectly paired with off the shoulder shirts and leg warmers. Whether you were a punk or a champion aerobic work out instructor we’re sure you enjoyed the occasional sip of a Sex on the Beach.

Ingredients
1 ounce of vodka
2 ounce of peach schnapps
Orange juice

How to
Super easy. Just pour ingredients into a tall glass of ice and stir!

The 90’s was the most confused decade of them all. Between Steve Job’s turtlenecks and the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, society didn’t know where to turn. Thankfully we had the guidance of Sex and the City’s Carrie Bradshaw to get us through the information overload era with a classic Cosmopolitan.

Ingredients
1 ounce vodka
½ ounce triple sec
½ ounce lime juice
½-1 ounce cranberry juice

How to
Fill the shaker with ice and add vodka, triple sec, lime and cranberry juice; shake well. Strain into a martini glass and garnish with a lime wedge.

And there you have it, a complete walk through the years 1920-1999. We saw bootleggers, learned how to jump and jive, watched the first man walk on the moon, experienced Woodstock, and had a few bad hair days, however we always did so with a trendy cocktail in hand. We hope you enjoyed this week’s rendition of Drinking through the Years.
