Sunday Funday

Featured Story / January 29, 2017 / No Comments.

raw
We are a strong believer in Sunday Funday. Drinking before noon is encouraged, delicious food is expected- what’s not to love? And nothing makes a better excuse to get your drink on on a Sunday afternoon better than a football game. Even though football season has come to an end for most teams, Sunday’s can still be fun (especially for Patriots and Falcons fans).

With one major Sunday Funday coming up (for those who are living under a ROCK, the Super Bowl is next weekend), we want to give y’all some tips to optimize your afternoon.

First of all- your venue is important. Stay at home or hit a bar? Be sure to pick the one that is right for the type of day you’re looking to have. Really into the game? Stay at home so you can actually hear and see the television. Or pick a sports bar where you know the game will be on every TV and fellow fans will be cheering on your team.  Just in it for the drinks? Hit a bar with some fun music. Just don’t be that one guy repeatedly asking the bartender to switch TV stations or turn up the volume in a bar where no one else is invested in the game.

Second on the list- drinking. Sunday Funday is not a race, it’s a marathon. Get over your skis too early and your day is finished before it even started. Please don’t be that drunk friend that everyone has to take care of for the rest of the day (we’ve all been there). Drink too slow and your day will be boring, thus you will probably become the buzzkill of the group (unless you’re the DD then we’re all about #TeamSober). If paced correctly, it can be the best day ever. We recommend starting with Bloody Mary’s. They’re usually drank at a more relaxed pace and they go great with brunch or bar snacks. Find a place that has a Bloody Mary bar or get the ingredients to make your own at home! Add some bacon/olives/pickles/shrimp/sliders or whatever else your little heart desires. You can’t go wrong with this recipe from Foodiecrush.

And lastly- get a solid group together. You could be at the best sports bar in town with the perfect table but it won’t matter if you are surrounded by people who aren’t on the same page as you. Take advantage of being able to hang out with friends and family while rooting for your favorite team. We promise, Sunday Funday will become your favorite part of the weekend.

Hornitos Tequila

Reviews / January 27, 2017 / No Comments.

Screen Shot 2017-01-27 at 9.27.30 AMFree tequila? We’re in.

This week, the Drinking in America Team sampled some Hornitos Tequila. It was a ~lit~ Thursday night for us! We tasted the Plata, Reposado, Spiced Honey and Black Barrel tequila.

We started with the basics, Reposado and Plata Tequila (AKA- silver and gold). The Plata Tequila (silver) was the favorite between these two. It was slightly flowery in aroma and a little tart in taste. But it had a shockingly smooth finish. We would definitely order a round of this at the bar and convince all our friends that claim to ‘hate tequila’ that this one is different. (If your friends don’t try to talk you into taking tequila shots, are they really your friends?) Don’t get us wrong though, the Reposado was delish as well. It had a nice subtle finish. After tasting these, we put margarita mix at the top of our grocery list.

Next, we went for the more unique flavors. Spiced Honey and Black Barrel. First of all, the Black Barrel comes packaged in a super sleek, and honestly a little intimidating, black bottle. It’s double aged in whiskey barrels for eighteen months, which gives it a very unique, smoky, woody taste. If you love both whiskey and tequila- this is definitely for you my friend. Use it in an a Tequila Old Fashioned. Then there’s the polar opposite: the Spiced Honey. For those who like it sweet, we recommend you try this tequila. It has a delicious maple and honey smell. The name does not lie, it tastes just liked spiced honey going down with a smooth, quick finish. Compared to your every day tequila, this is much sweeter. Throw some of this in some red sangria– YUM.

Here’s a bonus recipe for you. Try this Grilled Grapefruit Paloma, a popular twist on a Houston favorite, using Hornitos Plata Tequila. Serve this during your Super Bowl party and we guarantee it will be a hit:Grilled Grapefruit Paloma

  • 2 parts Hornitos Plata Tequila
  • 1 part fresh lime juice
  • 3/4 part ginger sage syrup
  • 2 dashes Angostura bitters
  • Top with grapefruit beer (approx. 1 part)
  • Grapefruit
  • Sage Sprigs

Combine equal parts sugar and water with 1 ginger slice and 4 sage sprigs and bring to a boil to create ginger sage syrup. Allow the mixture to cool, combine all ingredients except grapefruit beer in a shaker with ice and shake vigorously. Strain the mixture into a highball glass filled with ice and top with grapefruit beer. Garnish with a grilled grapefruit slice.

So over all- we totally DIG Hornitos Tequila. Order a shot. Buy a bottle. Buy a case. Go wild.

Man Cave: Raiders Fans Drink The Plane Dry

Man Cave / December 15, 2016 / No Comments.

giphyEverybody knows how wild Oakland Raiders fans can be. Through thick and thin, these folks are consistently the loudest, drunkest and most passionate fans in the NFL. It’s no wonder why Bleacherreport listed Raiders Nation as #1 on their list of the rowdiest fan bases in the NFL.

But last week, the Oakland faithful took their antics to new heights (pun intended).

On a flight from Oakland to Kansas City, a plane full of Raiders fans apparently drank every single drop of liquor on board. “The Black Hole” sucked up every beer, wine and mini bottle that the Southwest Airlines flight had to offer. And this was the day before the game against the Chiefs. The feat was so impressive in fact, that the pilot actually congratulated the fans over the intercom.

Unfortunately, the Raiders lost to the Chiefs 21-3 and relinquished their spot atop the AFC West standings. After such a crushing loss, I can only imagine how much those fans drank on the flight home…

5 Reasons to Drink This Weekend

5 Reasons To Drink This Weekend / October 14, 2016 / No Comments.

giphyTGIF people, TGIF! As Rihanna once said, “Cheers to the freakin’ weekend, I’ll drink to that.” Not that you need any other reason to drink besides that fact that it’s Friday and tonight is officially the start of the weekend, we thought we’d give you (especially Bostonians) a few extra reasons to throw a few back.

Big Papi is officially retired. We all knew this day was coming and with it the end of the Red Sox season, but it was still a hard goodbye. David Ortiz is a Boston legend. Not only does he hold the record for the Red Sox single-season for home runs with 54 (set during the 2006 season), but this past season he set another record for most extra-base hits in a season for players aged 40 or over. #GOAT

The NHL has kicked off and the Bruins won. The National Hockey League regular season started again two day ago and Boston won it’s first game. The Bruins played the Columbus’ Blue Jackets in Ohio and were victorious with a 6-3 win. Brad Marchand was responsible for two of the goals and three assists. Cheers to it finally being hockey season.

The Harry Potter franchise is back. It doesn’t matter how much of a fan you are because this is huge. All eight movies are available in select IMAX theaters all over the country for one week. This is happening because The Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, also written by J.K. Rowling, was transformed into movie and is coming out next month. The author also announced yesterday that five films would be released as a part of this story.

Bob Dylan won the 2016 Nobel Prize for literature. The 75-year-old rock star became the first songwriter to ever win the award. He received it “for having created new poetic expressions within the great American song tradition.” He is the first American to win since 1993, when the novelist Toni Morrison received the prestigious award. President Obama said it was “well-deserved” and took to Twitter to congratulate one of his “favorite poets.”

Brady is back in Foxborough. These last two weeks have been huge for Boston. Papi finished up his career and the “Deflate-gate” is finally over. Brady has already made his first appearance on the field in Cleveland against the Browns (winning by a sweeping score of 33-13) but now it’s time for him to return to home turf. The Patriots are scheduled to play the Cincinnati Bengals this Sunday in Foxborough. This is going to be a huge day in New England. Be sure to get your Bud Light Patriots-edition cans and support the team!

Sunday Night Football Drinking Game

Beer / October 2, 2016 / No Comments.

giphy-2Alcohol + Football + Greasy Good = Sunday Funday.

Claim your favorite spot on the couch, it’s time for Sunday Night Football. Whether you’re a diehard fan or just enjoy the comradery, you’ll enjoy this drinking game. Before the game starts, wager on which team you think is going to win. Then, whenever the opposing team scores, drinks are given out based on how many pointes they scored (or shots of liquor can be substituted). If everyone is cheering for the same team, you all drink for each score, be it a “happy shot” or a “f*ck the other team just scored shot.”

What You’ll Need
• TV
• Couch
• Beer
• Food
• Liquor

The Rules:
• 1 drink for every time a penalty flag is thrown
• 1 drink for every first time
• 2 drinks for a safety (+2 points)
• 2 drinks for a big offensive play (20+ yards gained)
• 3 drinks for a made field goal (+3 points)
• 3 drink for every coach’s challenge. Then guess if the call will be upheld or not – if you are correct, give 3 drinks out.
• 4 drinks for every turnover
• 5 drink when an onside kick is recovered by the kicking team
• 6 drinks for every touchdown scored (+6 points)

As always, drink responsibly and enjoy your Sunday Funday!

We’re not the type of people who need a reason to drink. If we’re breathing that’s reason enough. But for those who need more, here you go:

1. Send Pics: Kim K. made headlines this week when she tweeted a revealing photo of herself. Plenty of celebs came out of the woodwork to either condemn or support her choice. Now the Internet is covered in counter-nudes and think pieces. God bless America.

2. Dancing With The Stars: The cast was announced this week boasting football players, ex-wives and Marissa Cooper. If you’ve never tuned in before, this just might be the season that gets your foot tapping. Who doesn’t want another excuse to have a wine-filled viewing party on a weekday?

3. NFL: This week we said goodbye to Peyton and saw some wild free agency pickups. Even the most average of players came out of the shuffle with big time contracts. Take a look at your yearly salary and see if a career change is worth a concussion or two.

4. Thrones: The first official trailer for the new season premiered this week, and we may be over analyzing it, but we’re pretty sure Jon Snow is coming back to life. Pop open a fresh bottle of wine and let the plot twist theories fly further than Dany’s dragons.

5. Captain America: Civil War: The record for how many action heroes we can fit into one movie has been broken once again. Marvel released the trailer for its latest film this week and fans can’t wait to spend an evening watching Iron Man fight Captain America while Spiderman watches. It’s like a fever dream that you have to pay $12 to see.

We’re not the type of people who need a reason to drink. If we’re breathing that’s reason enough. But for those who need more, here you go:

1. Jonas: The Mid-Atlantic region is getting their first (and hopefully last) big storm of the winter this weekend. Alcohol, bread and giant shovels just became more valuable than bars of gold. Good luck to those weathering the storm. And remember, if you stay inside long enough it’ll have to melt eventually.

2. Glassdoor: The site released their annual list of best jobs in the US and yours likely wasn’t on it. Take a look at the rankings and dream about a life that might have been if you listened to your uncle when he told you computers were our future.

3. Playoffs: Football fans will be glued to their couches this Sunday to watch Brady V. the corpse formerly known as Peyton Manning and the Panthers v. Cardinals. It’ll be great television and, if nothing else, it’ll be an excuse to eat some great snacks.

4. Scurvy: An infant in Spain has been diagnosed with the disease that they believe was caused by drinking an almond milk-based formula. It’s a disappointment for those of us that thought we had just discovered the youngest pirate in history.

5. Mariah Carey: The diva announced her engagement to James Packer this week which caused all of America to Google “who is James Packer?” Legend has it that if you stare at their picture while stirring your mixed drink, you can hear Nick Cannon crying.

We’re not the type of people who need a reason to drink. If we’re breathing that’s reason enough. But for those who need more, here you go:

1. The Force Awakens: The latest Star Wars film hit the theaters on Thursday and no one will shut up about it. The only thing harder than realizing you’re in love with your sister is hiding from all of these Internet spoilers. May the force be with you.

2. Fantasy Playoffs: If you were lucky enough to make it into your league’s playoffs, you’ve got a big weekend ahead of you. Pour some of the good stuff and set a lineup your friends can’t mock you for even if you lose.

3. Amy and Tina: The girls are back on SNL this weekend to guest host and promote their new movie, Sisters. It promises to be filled with A+ comedy and maybe a Hillary impression or two. Tune in so you know which clips to send to your coworkers while you’re counting down the minutes to vacation on Monday morning.

4. Moustaches: Recent reports claim that men with moustaches outnumber all women in top US academic medical jobs. You know what that means, gents: it’s time to shave.

5. Adele Tickets: They went on sale Thursday and fans had more than a little trouble getting their hands on a pair. It’s just one more way the songstress has held us in her grasp only to watch us crumble into a puddle of tears.

We’re not the type of people who need a reason to drink. If we’re breathing that’s reason enough. But for those who need more, here you go:

1. Celeb Wine: Diane Keaton is releasing “The Keaton”. It’s a red wine that’s meant to be served on ice despite aficionados’ objections. Open up a bottle, dress up like Annie Hall and try your luck at boiling a live lobster.

2. New Looks: Stoli is releasing new packaging for the first time in 80 years. That means the last time they had a makeover FDR was President. What’s inside hasn’t changed but maybe buy yourself a bottle just to be sure.

3. Benghazi: Hillary’s hearing (see: emails etc.) took place this week. She was visibly unimpressed and the Internet loved it. Watch it back and take a drink every time she sighs.

4. Thursday Night Football: In a truly upsetting display of what was supposedly athleticism, the 49ers lost to the Seahawks on Thursday night. If you had any sense, you turned it off before wasting away too much of your evening. Here’s hoping Sunday treats NFL fans with a little more respect.

5. Adele: Her first single in three years “Hello” was released this week and the entire album will be available on November 20th. If her lyrics don’t bring you to tears then knowing that you’ll never be able to do her vocals justice at karaoke will.
