We all love whiskey, but for those of us less “in-the-know” about the different styles and variations, picking the right one can be intimidating. Luckily for us, whiskey expert Brian MacGregor is here to tell us about six of his favorite whiskeys, and the perfect times to enjoy each of them.
Balvenie 14 Year Caribbean Cask: With complex notes of cotton candy and peat, this aged spirit is perfect for sipping on warm summer nights. MacGregor suggests adding a drop of water and “watch this gem of a bottling sing.”
Evan Williams Single Barrel Vintage: This is great for unwinding after a long day of work. Dealing with people all day can be exhausting, but a shot of this whiskey is the perfect fix. This classic American Bourbon boasts an aroma of honey and baking spices and finishes with a white pepper tinge which creates a pleasant tick in your throat. The best part about this whiskey? It doesn’t break the bank.
Talisker Storm: MacGregor suggests sipping on this briny whiskey while sitting by the ocean, listening to the waves crash on the shore. This briny, slightly aggressive, yet in control dram of whiskey has all the right ~feels~
Yamazaki 18: This aged Japanese whiskey offers classic sandal wood notes, with a peaty backbone without being too in your face. MacGregor puts this whiskey in his top five of all time and suggests sipping it after a long day in front of the computer. It will help mellow the back and ease the eyes.
Bowmore 15 Darkest: This is the perfect whiskey to drink at the end of an enjoyable night out with friends and family. It’s a perfect drink to sit back and think about all the fantastic conversations, laughs and memories. This rich and peaty spirit has a slight briny aroma and a roasted campfire finish with hints of mellow caramelized marshmallow. Perfect to satisfy the your sweet tooth.
Highland Park 25: Considered to be the creme de la creme, this aged masterpiece is perfect for any and all occasions. This isn’t one of the most affordable drams, but if you see it, you must drink it- it’s that good.
