Like many classic cocktails, the origins of the margarita are heavily disputed. The one thing we can all agree on: it’s the perfect summer drink. And it’s actually pretty easy to make!
If you’ve been to a Mexican restaurant in the last decade, you know that the marg varieties are seemingly endless. But, if you’re a purist, we’ve got good news; classic margaritas are as simple as they are tasty, a perfect combination of three common bartending staples.
How to Make a Margarita
You’ll need:
- 1.5 ounces of blanco tequila*
- 1 ounce of orange liqueur (like triple sec or Cointreau)
- 0.5 ounces of lime juice
- Ice
- A lime wedge
- Salt or sugar depending on your rim preference
Step 1: Salt or sugar the rim of your glass, if you’re into that. To do so, pour the salt/sugar onto a dish, rub the lime wedge on the rim of your glass, and then dip it into the dish.
Step 2: Fill the glass with ice.
Step 3: Mix tequila, orange liqueur, and lime juice in a cocktail shaker full of ice.
Step 4: Pour and enjoy!

*Note: The tequila is the star of this show– all are welcome, but the fancier the tastier.
