Whether you’re a partygoer, sports fan, or just the average radio listener the words “Red Solo Cup” will render a similar mental image amongst those alike. The cup has revolutionized drinking in the past decade, becoming an American cultural symbol and representing the social life of college students and “twenty somethings.” The Red Solo Cup began gaining social presence when photo sharing and social media sites like Facebook and Myspace (which seems like ancient history) took off in the early 2000s. People started posting pictures of themselves with friends while holding their solo cup firmly in hand—a clear indication of drinking and party fun. Want proof? Just check out your friend’s Instagram feed, which most like features one picture with solo cups scattered around the kitchen counter of a house party, in classic beer pong formation, or held up with pride at a tailgate.

Solo cups bring the fun and that is exactly the motto of Toby Kieth’s 2011 platinum hit, “Red Solo Cup.” The chorus line, “Red solo cup, I drink you up, lets have a party,” plays back in our heads for hours after hearing the song (or even after just seeing one for that matter). This regular, ordinary and very basic functional cup has become the classic symbol of having a good time with friends.

While many might believe the solo cup life is for the crazy college ragers, rest assured. People of all ages are enjoying the freedom of a red solo cup and use them to sip on any beverage of their choice—beer, wine, mixed drinks and non-alcoholic beverages of course. So whether you are setting up for a house party, hosting the pregame, or even starting up the bonfire, drink on and don’t you ever let that precious solo cup fall. No solo cups, no party.

And if you’re tired of the same old solo cup BOC (beverage of choice), try this recipe:
