Whether you have a wife, girlfriend, or long-term lady friend, you probably know that relationships can be challenging, but worth it. One of the biggest complaints we hear from women is that their significant others don’t “appreciate them” enough, but we don’t think that’s necessarily the case. It isn’t that we don’t appreciate our wives, it’s that they think we don’t appreciate them just because we don’t always know how to show it. We try to say thank you, but usually they’re hoping for flowers, a heartfelt note…or perhaps, a parade.

Well, we’re about to help you score major brownie points with the missus: there’s a holiday today that your wife probably doesn’t even know about. Today is National Wife Appreciation Day and yep, you guessed it, the whole point is to show your wife/girlfriend/whoever that you appreciate her. If you get today right, you could potentially be in her good graces for months.

You could be boring and take your wife out to dinner tonight, or you could man up and give her what she really wants: a drink. You can’t just make her any old drink, though – it’s gotta take some effort to really impress her. So, we’re going to give you two cocktail recipes; one recipe that’s easy to make but seems more complicated, and one recipe that really is complicated (but worth it).

Black Orchid Martini

This cocktail isn’t too hard to make, but it uses fancy ingredients and has an edible flower as a garnish, so your wife is going to love it.

  • In a cocktail shaker filled with ice, add 1 1/4 parts Grey Goose L’Orange vodka, 3/4 parts creme de violette, 3/4 parts lemon juice, 1/2 parts simple syrup, and 1 dash peach bitters or orange bitters.
  • Shake vigorously until the outside of the shaker is frosted and beaded with sweat.
  • Strain into a martini cocktail glass and garnish with an edible orchid.

The Extra Mile

The cocktail itself is not hard to make, but the extra effort comes in preparing the ingredients; you’ll need to make your own Roasted Raspberry Syrup and Broiled Grapefruit Juice. Make sure your wife sees you making these things, and if that’s not an option, be sure to explain exactly what went into the making of her drink. This cocktail is called The Extra Mile for a reason and you deserve credit for your hard work.

  • Make the Roasted Raspberry Syrup (instructions through hyperlink above)
  • Make the Broiled Grapefruit Juice (instructions through hyperlink above)
  • For the drink, combine the following ingredients in a cocktail shaker: 2 1/4 oz. rye, 3/4 oz. broiled grapefruit juice, 3/4 oz. lemon juice, 12 oz. roasted raspberry syrup, barspoon of apple cider vinegar, dash of coffee pecan bitters, and a dash of bergamot bitters.
  • Shake and strain into a glass over ice. Top with soda water.
