Horchata

Horchata fever has taken the drinking scene by storm in the past couple of years. Brands like Rumchata and Velvet Cinn are dominating liquor store shelves and we just can’t seem to get enough of the cinnamon inspired beverage.

Horchata is easy to make and even easier to spike. Sure you can go out and buy yourself a bottle but it’s much more fun to make your own. Here’s what you’ll need to whip up your own delicious cinnamon booze.

  • 1 cup uncooked white long-grain rice
  • 5 cups water
  • ½ cup milk
  • ½ tbsp. vanilla extract
  • ½ tbsp. ground cinnamon
  • 2/3 cup white sugar
  • ½ cup rum

Pour rice and water into the bowl of a blender and blend until the rice just starts to break up (about a minute). Let rice and water mixture sit at room temperature for a minimum of three hours. Have a few beers in the meantime and once enough time has passed, strain the rice water into a pitcher and toss the rice. Stir in milk, vanilla, cinnamon, sugar and rum. Chill and stir before serving. Pour over ice and sprinkle with a dash of fresh cinnamon.
