Scotch and Bourbon usually dominate the whisky shelves but it’s been really easy to find a good Rye Whiskey at liquor stores and bars recently.

So what exactly is it?

Here’s what you need to know:

  • It must be at least 51% rye
  • Rye is a complex grain that adds depth and spice
  • Aged in new, charred American oak barrels
  • Rye Whiskey was popular before prohibition, but basically disappeared afterwards – until now
  • Old Overholt is the oldest Rye Whiskey brand
  • The flavor is less sweet than Bourbon or Scotch
  • Classic cocktails like Whiskey Sours, Old Fashioneds and Manhattans were originally made with Rye Whiskey

Next time you’re out, tell your bartender you want to try Rye Whiskey and ask for a recommendation. And if you’re feeling adventurous try one of these. You won’t be disappointed.
